Biannual Report of Activities – Academic Session 2011

Academic year 2011 has seen a series of extra-curricular activities providing education in terms of positive impact for our students. Our new session began on Feb 8th, and we saw a rise in student enrollment to 277. We have divided Nursery, pre-nursery and KG into two sections, with a ratio of 25 students per section.

On Feb. 24th of this year we celebrated School Foundation Day in our new campus. It was decorated beautifully with flowers and art work made by the students. The students presented speeches, prayer, and songs. The Chairman of School Management, Mr Rakesh Gupta motivated the students with an encouraging speech.

On March 31st, we had a prayer recitation competition. All students were provided a set of prayers in Hindi and English a week before the competition day. They were encouraged to rehearse the prayers with proper poise, calm and solemnity befitting a respectful attitude.

Our focus has always been on personality development and inculcating social responsibilities in our students. We encourage feedback from the parents in order to stay up to date and vigilant about each individual student’s progress. Therefore on April 1st, the school administration called a joint meeting of Parents and Teachers in the Admin Block. This enabled us to pass on all necessary information and also take note of valuable suggestions.

We held two picnics on separate days, one for the junior wing on May 7th and one for the senior wing on May 8th. Students of the junior wing had a school outing in the countryside near Shahpur. They enjoyed a nature walk, outdoor games, fresh mountain air and rippling streams with the warm company of friends and teachers. The seniors visited the Horticultural University in Palampur.

It has been the priority of the school to provide the best possible education using the latest advances in modern education. ABACUS mathematics classes were first introduced on May 8th. Students of class 1 through 6 were assigned a weekly schedule of instruction from ABACUS coaches every Monday. The teachers have noted a remarkable rise in learning ability, especially in mathematics since this class has been provided.

Mother’s Day was observed on May 9th. Children were encouraged to create art and crafts gifts for their mothers and present them on Sunday of May 9th.

Poetry Recitation Competition in Hindi and English was held on May 11th. The students were provided a set of poems from their respective poetry books which made it convenient for the children to learn and prepare for the recitation competition. Diction, continuity and confidence were the criteria for judgment.

Also, on May 16 we began teaching through Digi-classes, where students are taught through electronic digital board slides, videos and graphics. Mathematics, Life Sciences, Geography, History, Civics and Environmental Sciences are effectively and easily taught through Digi-classes. This method interests and engages the students in such a way that improves their learning and retention ability to a remarkable degree. This has made an appreciated difference in the quality of education at Highland School and demonstrates Highland’s pledge to maintain pace with dynamic new techniques in education.

World Environment Day was observed on June 4th, since it was a Sunday on June 5th. Children happily volunteered to bring tiny plants in pots and others drew pictures on conserving Nature with punchy slogans. At morning assembly everyone came forward and shared a poem or message on nature.

On a lighter note children were given the opportunity to enjoy the century old Rajasthani puppet show on June 6th.

As it is said, “Handwriting is the mirror of personality”. We had already trained our students to write in cursive longhand in the early months of each academic session. A calligraphy competition was held on June 15th, in both Hindi and English for nursery students and on up. Teachers prepared calligraphy sheets with alphabets in Hindi and English, and vocabulary for junior students of nursery, kg and class1. Students of class II onwards were given a paragraph on a moral topic. Also we have a weekly drill class given by the physical trainer and we introduced Karate classes. The instructor trains students weekly in the school ground.

The school administration decided to conduct Half Yearly and Annual Examinations in July and December respectively every year instead of 1st and 2nd Terminal Examinations. This change in the examination schedule was to create a more efficient use of time in teaching, and reduce stress on the students. It was also decided to conduct four monthly class tests in the months of April, May, Sept. and Oct, on the first three working days of these months.

Half Yearly Examinations for Nursery to VI students commenced on July 10th. Syllabus for each subject done until June was revised well in each class. The students appeared for examinations carrying a hundred marks for each subject. The result cards for them will be handed over on July 15th. From July 11th onwards regular studies started for all classes.
